The Little Monkey and The Little Bird

The Little Monkey and the Little Bird

By Terryl Miller Sky

A little monkey has a friend who is a little bird.

A little bird has a friend who is a little monkey.

They both live high in the trees with a breeze where they feel happy and safe.

High in the trees with a breeze they can see all around and around and around.

They can see down, down, down far below to the ground.

They can see up, up, up, high, high high.

So far up into the deep blue sky.

One sunny morning the monkey cried.

The little bird said “Little monkey you cry! why, why, why?”

The monkey looked up and said “Little bird, why do I cry? I want to fly.”

“But you are a little monkey, not a bird!” his friend the Bird said.

“Monkeys swing. Only birds can fly and sing!” said the little Bird.

“Hhhhhmmm” that’s right. “I can swing!”

“Birds can’t swing, little monkey, but you can! How fun it must be!”

the little bird said to his monkey friend.

“Yes, it is fun to swing, swing, swing – I feel so free!” the monkey said.

“I wish I could swing” said the little bird.

“You can’t little bird, only monkeys can swing” said the little monkey.

“O.K. little monkey, you swing and swing and swing, and I will fly and sing and sing, o.k.?” asked the bird.

“O.k. little bird,” the monkey happily replied.

“I’m glad I am a monkey because I can swing, swing, swing!”

“And I’m glad I’m a bird and can fly and sing, sing, sing!”

And so the little monkey and the little bird remained friends for years and years living in the trees, with the rustling leaves in the breeze.

The bird still flies and sings and sings, and the monkey still swings and swings and swings.

And they lived happily ever after.
